What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapists are master leveled professionals trained in both art and therapy.  They are knowledgeable about human development, psychological theories, and clinical practice; as well as spiritual, multicultural and artistic traditions, and most of all the healing potential of art.
Art therapy is the intentional use of art-making to address psychological and emotional needs within a professional relationship.  Through creating art and reflection on the art products and processes, people can increase awareness of self and explore personal issues and concerns.  It is important to state that being "good at art" is not necessary to benefit from art therapy.  No previous art experience or artistic talent is needed to participate in art therapy.  Art therapy can be used as a primary form of therapy or serve as an accompanying treatment to other forms of therapy.
Art Therapy Sessions
Individual Sessions
Sessions last one hour and involve art making.

My approach to art therapy is guided by the belief that, through art-making we draw out what we know deeply about ourselves.  This is the strength of art therapy; gaining self awareness through creativity.  Art therapy is about the metaphors and messages that come to us in gentle ways.  It is not about being artistic or talented.
